ABOUT HONG KONG EXTRAS

Hong Kong Extras is an independent, non-commercial website established in June 2007 for the benefit of both first-time and regular visitors to Hong Kong. It aims to provide a “one-stop” source for accurate, authoritative, comprehensive, up to date factual information useful to visitors. Since its launch the website has also been used as a source of information by researchers and by Hong Kong residents. Its author has been a regular visitor to Hong Kong for many years and spends about three months every year in the city, travelling to all parts of the territory. Hong Kong Extras website received its four millionth visitor in November 2012.

Hong Kong, “Asia’s World City”, is an ever changing, dynamic destination where East meets West and is a natural gateway to China. Information in guide books quickly becomes outdated and Hong Kong Extras enables visitors to be aware of new attractions and developments, temporary and permanent closures, alterations to opening times and planned future developments as well as providing comprehensive range of information including public transportation, shopping, museums, exhibitions, harbour tours, open-top bus tours, heritage trails, beaches, parks and gardens, theme parks, markets, outlying islands, concessions available for senior visitors, public holidays and much more useful information. All photographs (other than photographs issued with press releases) have been taken by the author.

Hong Kong is a popular stopover or short stay destination and many visitors don’t always have the opportunity to venture beyond its most popular urban attractions. However Hong Kong has many contrasting sides ranging from its crowded frenetic urban conurbations to tranquil peaceful scenic rural locations of outstanding beauty and the website aims to help visitors with a little extra time in Hong Kong to explore some of the more “off the beaten track” attractions.

Although Hong Kong Extras provides information about new hotel openings, planned future hotels and re-named hotels there are no hotel or restaurant reviews. These tend to be subjective and there are more appropriate websites;

For hotel reviews Hong Kong Extras would recommend TripAdvisor where independent reviews by guests can be found for each hotel;

For reviews of Hong Kong restaurants OpenRice, which is has recently been made available in English, is generally acknowledged as the best source for comprehensive independent reviews by diners.
